Code Breaker
Crack the hidden colour code. Each guess tells you how close you are.
About Code Breaker
A free Mastermind-style code-breaking game. The computer hides a secret code of coloured pegs. After every guess you get feedback: a solid pip for each peg in the right place, and a hollow pip for each right colour in the wrong place. Use logic to crack it before you run out of rows. Easy has no repeats, Normal allows them, and Hard uses five pegs and eight colours. Every colour has a symbol too, so it's colour-blind friendly.
How to play Code Breaker
- Pick colours to fill the slots in your current row, then press Check.
- A solid pip means one peg is the right colour in the right place.
- A hollow pip means one peg is the right colour but in the wrong place.
- Use the feedback to narrow it down and crack the code before the rows run out.
Tips and strategy
- Open with two pairs of colours (like red-red-orange-orange) to learn a lot at once.
- The pips don't say which peg they refer to. Change one thing at a time when you're unsure.
- Only guess codes that fit every clue so far.
Code Breaker FAQ
Is this the same as Mastermind?
It uses the same classic rules as the board game Mastermind, with original artwork. Normal mode is the standard four pegs and six colours with repeats allowed.
Can I play if I'm colour-blind?
Yes. Every colour also has its own symbol (circle, triangle, square and so on), so you can play by shape alone.
How many guesses does it take?
Normal codes can always be solved in five guesses with perfect play. Most people take six or seven.
Is Code Breaker free to play?
Yes. Code Breaker is free in your browser on OFF PLAY, with nothing to download or install.
