Futoshiki
A Latin square with greater-than and less-than signs.
About Futoshiki
Futoshiki is a Japanese number puzzle: fill the grid so every row and column uses each number once, while obeying the < and > signs between neighbouring cells. Signs pointing up or down work the same way between rows. Play free 4×4, 5×5 and 6×6 puzzles in three difficulties, with pencil notes, undo and hints.
How to play Futoshiki
- Fill each row and column with the numbers 1 to N, once each.
- Every sign must hold: the small end points to the smaller number.
- Use notes to track candidates.
- Fill the whole grid correctly to win.
Tips and strategy
- A cell that is smaller than a neighbour can't be the largest number.
- Chains of signs (a < b < c) push numbers to the edges fast.
- When a number fits in only one cell of a row, place it.
