About Math Cages

Math Cages is a KenKen-style arithmetic puzzle. Fill the grid so each row and column contains every number once, and the numbers in each outlined cage combine to its target with the operation shown: add, subtract, multiply or divide. Easy puzzles use only addition and subtraction; harder ones bring in multiplication and division on grids up to 6×6.

How to play Math Cages

  1. Each row and column uses the numbers 1 to N exactly once.
  2. Numbers in a cage must make its target with its operation, e.g. '6×' or '2÷'.
  3. Subtraction and division cages hold two cells, in either order.
  4. A single-cell cage just tells you the number.

Tips and strategy

  • Start with single-cell cages and two-cell division cages: they have few options.
  • Big products in a small grid narrow things down fast.
  • Use notes for the candidate pairs in each cage.
